At the heart of our tale is the incredible Anju Desai, our Creative Director and the driving force behind our success. With a mischievous sparkle in her eyes and a boundless imagination, Anju is the maestro of our enchanting journey. Her endless array of ideas and relentless pursuit of perfection ensures that every moment with us is nothing short of extraordinary.

Anju’s Artistic Journey

A talented graphic designer and artist, who effortlessly juggled a graphic business and painting classes in the community. Then, one day, a delightful twist came her way! An opportunity arose for Anju to explore the world of Bollywood dancing by leading an extra class. Embracing it with her adventurous spirit, she fearlessly took the chance. With her childhood dance and music experiences and her teenage years in theatre. The stage was her playground, and she fearlessly owned it with every step she took.

She welcomed the opportunity to start a brand-new Bollywood dance class in East Auckland. Little did she know that this decision would mark the beginning of a magical journey.

From Dance Class to Hen Party

Anju’s Bollywood dance class quickly became a success, and within just two weeks, she was approached to organise her first hen party. Being unfamiliar with the concept of a hen party, Anju turned to Google and her Kiwi friends for guidance. Among the advice she received, one well-wisher said, “Just be Anju, and you will be fine.” Trusting her instincts and authenticity, she organised her first-ever hen party, and it turned out to be a roaring success!

The Birth of Bollywood Costume Hire 

The party guests were captivated not only by Anju’s dance moves but also by the breathtaking Bollywood costumes she wore. They fell in love with the vibrant colours, the glamorous look, and the sheer elegance of Indian fashion. Encouraged by her friends, Anju decided to take a few costumes to her next dance class session, and that’s how the idea of Bollywood costume hire was born.

In July 2009, this beautiful studio came into existence with just five costumes and twenty scarves. Over the years, it has blossomed into a treasure, now housing more than a thousand costumes, including designer and non-designer labels, along with a wide array of accessories that are nothing short of delightful. Also, loved by many Kiwis, her saree draping mobile services added a touch of elegance and charm to every occasion. With her and her team’s expert touch, she weaved magic, leaving everyone mesmerised by the grace of the saree.

From its humble beginnings, the studio’s popularity skyrocketed, becoming an award-winning costume haven. The recognition poured in as it won several Best Costume awards both nationally and internationally, giving its status as a true Bollywood paradise.
